Choose the right cartridge

Compare needle diameter, grouping and pack quantity on each listing. Round liners, shaders and magnums serve different workflows; confirm compatibility with your machine before choosing a cartridge. Check the selected variant and pack contents before ordering.

Pair cartridges with your tattoo machine. For background on machine setup, read our voltage guide for lining, shading and colour packing.

Tattoo needle buying guide

RL, RS, M1 and RM

RL (round liner) needles have tightly grouped points for lines and detail. RS (round shader) has a more open round grouping for shading and smaller fills. M1 (weaved magnum) uses staggered rows for broad shading and colour packing. RM (curved or round magnum) has a curved edge often chosen for soft blends. Brand naming varies, so check each product’s specifications.

Needle gauges

Gauge describes individual needle diameter, not grouping count. 0.25 mm (often #08) is finer and can suit detail or controlled ink flow; 0.30 mm (often #10) is a versatile middle ground; 0.35 mm (often #12) generally supports heavier flow for bolder work and packing. Count, taper and technique also affect results.

Compatibility and packaging

Confirm cartridge fitting with the machine or cartridge-grip manufacturer; compatibility is not universal. Standard bar needles require a compatible machine and tube or tip, and are not interchangeable with cartridges. Check each listing for pack quantity, gauge and configuration, and whether it is a single or box sale. For sterile-labelled items, inspect the individual seal and expiry before use. Single-use needles and cartridges must not be reused.

Choosing your configuration

Start with the job: RL for lines, RS for smaller shading, M1 for larger fills, and RM for soft shading. Match count to design scale, and consider gauge and taper alongside your machine setup, hand speed and established technique. Test unfamiliar configurations on practice skin before client work.
